Muswellbrook Shire Council is ramping up plans to diversify the local economy, positioning the Upper Hunter as a hub for emerging industries as regional Australia continues to evolve.
The push comes ahead of the launch of Council’s “Powering the Future Economy” campaign at NSW Parliament House on 25 March, aimed at attracting new investment and employment opportunities to the region.
Council has also welcomed the results of a recent NGM Group YouGov survey, which found more than 27 per cent of respondents say regional living is more appealing than it was 12 months ago. The national survey found 71 per cent of Australians believe regional areas are no longer defined by traditional industries, while 89 per cent say innovation and emerging sectors will shape the future of regional Australia.
Muswellbrook Shire Council director of community and economy Shaelee Richards said the region is actively planning for change ahead of future mine closures.
“Muswellbrook is uniquely located, with access to Newcastle International Airport, Australia’s largest east coast seaport in Newcastle, and within three hours of Sydney,” she said.
“Our geographic position and strong infrastructure connections place us in an excellent position to take advantage of emerging industries and future investment opportunities.”
Several major projects are planned across the shire over the next five years, including the Muswellbrook Bypass, the redevelopment of Olympic Park and the Regional Entertainment Centre, aimed at supporting growth and improving liveability.
Mayor Jeff Drayton said it was vital local businesses were involved as the region prepares for economic transition.
“What we have might be changing, and we want all our businesses to be prepared for that change,” he said.
Local small businesses are invited to attend the campaign launch at the Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre on Tuesday 31 March at 5:30pm, with RSVPs required by 24 March.
