A full assessment of the Calvary Mater Newcastle campus will get underway, with NSW Health bringing in an independent consultant to examine the hospital’s condition. Health Infrastructure is commissioning the review separately from the public‑private partnership that currently manages the facility.
The process will begin next month with a detailed inspection of the hospital’s heating, ventilation and air‑conditioning systems. The assessment aims to identify the full extent of remediation required, including areas where previous building work was carried out to address mould.
The investigation will also revisit locations where earlier repairs were completed, ensuring any ongoing issues are properly identified. NSW Health says the audit will help guide future planning and upgrades at the hospital.
Health Minister Ryan Park says staff have been raising concerns for some time about the standard of past facilities management work.
“This independent review responds directly to those concerns,” he said.
“While this will not be a quick process, it will provide clarity on what needs to be done and allow a clear plan to be developed to ensure the necessary work is completed to an appropriate standard.”
While the process is expected to take several months, the final building audit report is due later this year.
