NSW State Emergency Service volunteers have responded to more than 2,300 incidents across the weekend as intense rain caused flash flooding in Sydney, the Central Coast, Illawarra and parts of the Hunter.
The storm risk has now shifted north, with residents in the Hunter and Mid North Coast warned to prepare for heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorms. While conditions are easing in Sydney, a major clean-up remains underway.
“Our volunteers and emergency service partners have been out in force today assisting with fallen trees, damaged roofs and skylights, downed powerlines, and helping residents who have had water come into their homes,” acting Assistant Commissioner Sonya Oyston said.
Overnight, SES crews completed 25 flood rescues for vehicles stuck on flooded roads. An emergency warning for Narrabeen Lagoon has been downgraded, but minor flooding continues on the Parramatta River. A landslide at Great Mackerel Beach near Barrenjoey Headland impacted three properties.
On the Central Coast, residents at Yarramalong and Dooralong remain isolated due to flooding on the Wyong River and Jilliby Creek. A minor flood warning is still in place for the Nepean River at Menangle Bridge and the Hawkesbury River at North Richmond.
Thunderstorms and rain are expected to persist for the next few days, and the SES is urging people to monitor conditions and avoid driving through floodwaters.
