The Milsons Gully Fire burning in Goulburn River National Park has been upgraded to Watch and Act as extreme heat drives dangerous conditions. The blaze is located near Bylong Valley Way and is threatening properties in Baerami, Baerami Creek, Widden, Yarrawa and Kerrabee.
Authorities warn the fire may impact homes on Flags Road between the Golden Highway and Death Adder Trail, as well as Worondi Creek Road. Embers are expected to blow ahead of the main fire front, creating spot fires that could threaten properties earlier than the main blaze.
Firefighters, supported by water bombing aircraft and heavy machinery, are working to strengthen containment lines. However, fire activity is increasing on the southern edge near Bylong Valley Way, which is now closed to all traffic. The Golden Highway remains open but may close at short notice if conditions change.
Residents on Flags Road and Worondi Creek Road who are not prepared are urged to leave immediately, heading east along the Golden Highway and south to Sandy Hollow. The fire danger rating for Wednesday in the Greater Hunter region is forecast to be moderate, with temperatures in the low 30s and a chance of rain.
