More than 3,000 residents across the Upper hunter have been left without power after a severe storm swept through the region this afternoon.
The State Emergency Service have received at least 70 calls for assistance, with the majority coming from the Muswellbrook area. Crews are responding to fallen trees, damaged roofs and downed power lines. They’re anticipating more calls overnight.
Authorities are reminding residents to secure outdoor items such as furniture and trampolines, and to stay clear of fallen trees and branches, which can cause serious injury or death.
“If you see any power lines down, assume they are live and report them immediately,” said Peter Keega, Deputy Zone Commander for the Upper Hunter.
Storm season runs from September through to March or April, and locals are urged to have an emergency plan ready as more severe weather is expected in the coming months.
