If you’re a frequent gym goer you may have noticed a new trend that has steadily been on the rise for a few years now. You’re doing your set, you’re tired, sweaty and exhausted, and then you look around happen to see someone setting up a tripod to put their camera on to film themselves working out and its faced your direction.
Whilst filming yourself working out absolutely can have its benefits of reviewing the footage to check you have the correct form and getting your full range of motion, the main issue here is that a lot of the cameras are being used to create fitness videos for peoples personal social media pages. Justifiably a lot of people do not wish to be caught in the background of someone else’s gym video when they’re not exactly looking their best, and in some particularly nasty cases, end up being the subject of a video. Very rarely, but it does happen, some regular gym goers have found themselves the subject of someone elses video as people call out how they look, their form whilst working out, and some being accused of staring at the influencer whilst they work out.
As this trend has continued to grow many have started to voice their objections to cameras in these spaces, with many now outright saying they now avoid exercising in public due to this. Many fitness figures receive an income from having an active social media page where they post about their workouts, diets and overall gym lifestyle and for the most part this is fairly harmless and has been beneficial in helping others get into better routines. But the unfortunate examples of people using it to get clicks and views in any way they can has turned this into a heated discussion and controversial topic, with many calling for gyms to ban cameras in the gym.
@thejoeyswoll When you film in the gym YOU are the inconvenience, NOT the people trying to work out. #gymtok #gym #fyp ♬ original sound – Joey Swoll
One fitness influencer in particularly, by the name of Joey Swoll, has taken it upon himself to try and call out those who do these nasty habits in an attempt to make the gym a safe space again. Swoll often claims that trying to be fit and going to the gym is hard enough as it is without someone shoving a camera in their face.
What are your thoughts? Do you think cameras need to be banned from the gym or is this an over reaction?
