I Don't Like Cricket...

I love cricket.

I love playing cricket.

I love watching cricket.

I love listening to cricket.

.

Why? Because...

  • in cricket you can get run out without facing a ball.
  • Tests can be contested over five days and not achieve a result.
  • Or a side can win a Test in less than two days.
  • when you bat, eleven people are completely focused against you alone.
  • you can snare an unbelievably difficult catch one minute, and drop an absolute sitter the next.
  • you spend a lot of time sitting (and standing) around chatting to your teammates.
  • your team are your mates.
  • you get to wear an all white outfit, and rub a red leather ball on your trousers.
  • Ricky Ponting is representing his country at age 37
  • Pat Cummings represented his country at 18
  • Hitting sixes is awesome fun
  • There is always a chance you might get hurt – it makes it a little edgy
  • In cricket there are no rules; there are the Laws of Cricket
  • Shane Warne is marrying Liz Hurley
  • & a thousand other reasons!

I was watching the golf the other day and something curious occurred to me.

In golf it’s poor form for spectators to make any noise when someone is just about to play a shot; judging by the pained and angry looks of professional golfers when someone in the gallery dares to whisper, cough or speak, making noise rates somewhere just below cannibalism on the taboo scale.

Elite tennis players are also touchy when it comes to noise aren’t they? Umpires are often heard to ask for “Quiet please”, and rallies are carried out under the strictest code of spectator silence. Mass “tut-tutting” ensues should anyone dare break this code.

In Test cricket, a batsman faces a bowler who has the potential to hurl a solid projectile at his body with a force of approximately 8,000 newtons. Quite often bowlers will intentionally aim at a batsman’s body or head; it’s an accepted part of the game. In Test cricket, crowds are not silent. In Test cricket, tens of thousands of spectators will scream and yell as the bowler runs in to deliver the potentially physically damaging cricket ball.

Am I missing something here, or are tennis players and golfers a little too precious?
