Child Safety Tips

1.     Every child should know how to say NO to an adult.  If a child is grabbed by an adult, they should scream NO NO NO as loud as they can;

2.     If a stranger approaches a child and asks directions, the child should TAKE 2 STEPS BACK AND GET READY TO RUN;

3.     Every family should have a “Secret Word” or “Magic Number” that only the family knows.  Children should be instructed not to go with anyone who doesn’t know the code or number;

4.     Each child should follow the same route to and from school, the store or a friend’s house……NO SHORT CUTS;

5.     Children should walk in groups.  They should never go to the movies, parks or public toilets/restrooms alone;

6.     Children should know that it’s OK to IGNORE strangers;

7.     Play – WHAT IF games.  This will help your children work out answers to problems they may face eg.  “What would you do if we were separated in the Shopping Centre?  What would you do if someone in a car asked for directions, or wanted you to help them find their dog?

8.     Children should learn to recognise a SAFE PLACE – eg homes, friends in the neighbourhood where they can go for help;

9.     Children should always tell their parents where they are going, who they are going with, and when they will be back home, and;

10. Children should not linger in school yards and parks after other children have left.
